Probably the same sort of "popular" as used in reference to M$ Windows - 
because it's supplied with virtually every new computer it has the most 
users, and Answer Phone is put on to every new connection. So, by that 
measure it's hugely popular.

(Why does this remind me of the comment about statistics in last week's 
episode of HHGTTG?)
